The day after I lost my dear Uncle Bob, September 6th, 2021, I decided to take one film exposure with his old Nikon FE each day for the next year, concluding the project on the first anniversary of his death. Holding that camera and feeling the familiar muscle memory of dialing in the aperture and shutter speed felt like he had his arm around me. Originally, I titled this project “My Year Without Uncle Bob” but later changed it to “A Year with Uncle Bob’s Camera.” It's better to focus (pun intended) on what I’ve got to remember him by as opposed to what I'm living without. Unintentionally, this body of work also documents one full year of pandemic life, when my world wasn't much bigger than my backyard most days.
